Last night the Open Mic at Cafe Kafka put up a good show despite competition from the Vienna Krimi-Nacht of crime fiction readings in Vienna coffee houses. Special guest was Kirstin Breitenfellner who read from her latest book, with translations into English by Peter Waugh. Homemade Gordon Banks mc’d and open mic participants read prose and poetry in English and German, with some some in Spanish and French, finishing off just before midnight with some impromptu pieces. It’s the summer break now with the next open mic not until 5 October, but there’ll be Poetry in the Park on 1 September, the Poetry Picnic on 8 September and guest poets from Belgium on 15 September, all from 3 to 7 at the Theseus Temple in the Volksgarten.
