I went to see the Japanese embroidery of a classmate, Lyn, and was amazed at the patience and perserverence that must have gone into her work in progress. She told me that Japanese embroidery is nui-do or “The way of embroidery” in the fusion of spirituality (Do) and phenomenon (embroidery) based on Zen philosophy. And that it has been traditionally taught using the principles of martial arts in the master student manner.
In a way, it reminded me of the craft of writing, and how trying to get it right is a long but rewarding process. With each piece, you start over, hopefully going up one of the many phases. But it’s the process you have to love. Thank you, Lyn.
